1. All-Purpose Cleaner

One product that does numerous jobs will save you time and money. An all-purpose cleaning solution, preferably one with anti-bacterial properties, can be used to clean just about any hard surface in the home, e.g. floors, countertops, baths, and sinks. Look for “no rinse” formulas to save further time and effort.

2. Multi Surface Anti-Bacterial Cleaning Spray

Much like an all-purpose cleaner but in a spray bottle, this is one of the handiest cleaning products to have in your kitchen and bathroom. Look for no rinse formulas that will kill 99% of common germs. It makes keeping your kitchen safe really easy, just spray it and wipe to make sure work surfaces are clean and safe again, especially after tasks such as meat preparation.

3. Bleach

It’s a no-brainer to have bleach in your kit. Bleach is the original germ-killer and a go-to product when that extra kick of cleaning power is needed. For sparkling, fresh smelling and hygienic toilets, nothing is better than a swirl of bleach and a little scrub with a toilet brush. It can also be used diluted to clean some hard surfaces around the home.

4. Washing Up Liquid

Even if you have a dishwasher, washing up liquid is essential for soaking encrusted pots and pans, rinsing out dishcloths, and for general household cleaning jobs. A damp scouring sponge with a splash of washing up liquid is an effective cleaner for stubborn dirt on kitchen work surfaces. There will be some types of surfaces you won’t be able to use your all-purpose cleaner or bleach on, and for these washing up liquid is ideal.

5. Mop Bucket

Unless your home is entirely carpeted, you will need a decent mop bucket in your cleaning kit. Go for metal variations for longevity, sturdiness and durability. Depending on your choice of mop, you may need to get a bucket that includes a wringer for draining excess water from the mop.

6. Mop

The classic choice is a cotton mop, which is ideal for washing wooden, tiled and vinyl floors. Other options include cloth, sponge and microfibre, which boast advantages such as quicker drying and faster to use.

7. Rubber Gloves

Washing up liquid, bleach and other cleaning products can dry out and sometimes irritate your skin. Protecting your hands with rubber gloves will allow you to clean in comfort and safety, while also preventing harmful germs from becoming lodged in nails or sneaking into any broken skin and causing infection.

8. Window Cleaning Spray

This specialist product for mirrors and windows is worth investing in as using alternatives like multi-purpose spray or washing up liquid on these surfaces will leave frustrating streaks and watermarks. For the quickest and easiest route to shining, streak and dirt free windows and mirrors, window cleaning spray is a must.

9. Furniture Polish

The advantage of using furniture polish on your furniture is that it has dust repellent properties that make your cleaning efforts last longer. Many varieties of this product also include ingredients such as beeswax, which will help protect your wood and prolong its beauty.

10. Jeyes Fluid

Household cleaning isn’t just about the indoors, which is why Jeyes Fluid - an iconic multi-purpose outdoor cleaner - has made it into our top 15. As well as superior cleaning for greenhouses, paths, patios, pet areas, tools and more; it kills germs and odours, leaving everything fresh and disinfected.

11. Daily Shower Cleaner

Spraying daily shower cleaner all over your shower after each shower is the easiest way to keep your shower clean for longer. Eventually, when your shower does need a proper clean, it will be much easier to do; and the period of time between these cleans will be longer.

12. Toilet Brush

There’s no easier way to keep your toilets clean than with bleach and a toilet brush. Designed with bristles to reach up under rims where germs can accumulate, your toilet brush is an essential tool to maintain safe and hygienic bathrooms.

13. Duster

Thanks to modern technology, we no longer have to rely on our feathered friends for our dusting needs. The basic structure of the feather duster remains the same but instead of feathers there are dust-grabbing synthetic materials that are much more effective. A quick run around your house with a good duster should be the first task on your cleaning list. Look for long handles that will allow you to reach above curtain rails, lights and into ceiling corners to get those nasty cobwebs.

14. Cloths & Sponges

Every cleaning kit needs a selection of rags or cloths, and sponges both with and without scouring pads attached.

15. Storage

Use a suitably sized plastic crate, basin, storage box, bucket or tub to keep your cleaning kit together (all except the mop and bucket of course). You can grab it and bring it around with you to save countless trips back and forth, up and down stairs for different items as you realise you need them.
